Rhode Island State Requirements

Continuing Education Hours

  • 24 Hours Biennially including 3 hours of Ethics.

License Renewal

  • License will expire on the last day of the licensee’s birth month.

Courses accepted for CE Credit

  • Classroom Courses / Seminar Courses
  • Self-Study Courses
  • Online Courses
  • Instructors will receive the same amount of credits as the Students

Courses Subject Requirements

  • Three (3) hours of ethics each compliance period.
  • Minimum of five (5) hours in each line of authority for which the Agent is licensed.

Annuity Requirement

  • Effective June 1, 2011 - Producers holding a life line of authority on 06/01/2011 who sell or wish to sell annuity products must complete 4 hours of one-time training in annuities by 12/01/2011. Producers who obtain a life insurance line of authority on or after 6/01/2011 must compete the training before selling annuities.

Long Term Care Requirement

  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in Rhode Island, producers must complete an initial 8-hour NAIC LTC course approved in any state.
  • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24-month period.

Carryover Requirements

  • Up to 12 credit hours may be carried over to the next compliance period.
  • Ethics credits will be carried forward as general credits.

Course Repetition

  • Credit will not be given for a course that is repeated within a compliance period.

Final Exam

  • All course exams must be proctored by a disinterested third party.
  • General Monitor Affidavit Needed.

Exemptions

  • Individuals holding limited lines licenses for which an exam is not required.
  • Individuals who are at least 55 years old at the time of renewal and have been continuously licensed for 25 years without lapse.
  • Individuals who held a license for at least 20 years and were at least 60 years old at the time of renewal as of July 3, 2004.
  • Non-resident agents whose home state is reciprocal with Rhode Island.
