Ohio State Requirements

Continuing Education Hours

  • 24 Hours Biennially including 3 Hours of Ethics.

License Renewal

  • The license renewal date is the last day of the agents birth month.

Courses accepted for CE Credit

  • Classroom Courses
  • Self-Study Courses
  • Online Courses
  • Instructors will receive double the course credits as the students

Courses Subject Requirements

  • Three (3) hours of ethics each compliance period.

Annuity Requirement

  • Producers licensed to sell, solicit or negotiate annuities prior to 7/01/2011 must complete a one-time 4-hour Annuity Training course by January 1, 2012 in order to continue to sell annuities. Producers licensed after 7/01/2011 must complete this training before selling, soliciting or negotiating annuity products.

Long Term Care Requirement

  • Initial 8-hour LTC training requirement: Before selling, soliciting, or negotiating LTC insurance products in Ohio, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, state-approved LTC training course.
  • Ongoing 4-hour LTC training requirement: After completing the 8-hour initial training requirement, producers must complete 4 hours of state-approved LTC training every 24-month compliance period following completion of the initial LTC training.

Carryover Requirements

  • Carryover of CE credits will only apply to license renewal applications submitted to the Department on or after February 1, 2016.
  • Resident agents who hold a Major Lines License may carryover up to 12 credits during each renewal period.
  • All carryover credits are applied as “General” credits and therefore agents will continue to need to meet specific ethics or line of business requirements.
  • If the same course is taken more than once within a renewal period, the duplicate course(s) will not count towards the credits applicable to carry over to the next renewal period.

Course Repetition

  • Credit may not be given for a course that is repeated within a compliance period.

Final Exam

  • Ohio requires 10 questions per credit hour on the examination.
  • Self-study examinations are not required to be proctored. The student must complete an affidavit certifying that he or she took the exam without assistance of another person.
  • Ohio Affidavit of Personal Responsibility To be signed by Student.

Exemptions

  • Non-residents who have met the CE requirements in their home state.
  • Agents who hold only a Limited Authority license.
  • Agents who have been granted inactive status by the Superintendent.
