Montana State Requirements

Continuing Education Hours

  • 24 Hours Biennially including 3 hours of Ethics.

License Renewal

  • License renewal date is currently being converted to last day of birth month. All new licensees have revised renewal date. All renewing licensees are being converted as they renew. Estimate is that they have converted half the licensees.

Courses accepted for CE Credit

  • Classroom Courses
  • Self-Study Courses
  • Online Courses
  • Instructors will be credited with two times the number of approved credit hours

Courses Subject Requirements

  • Resident and non-residents must complete 1 credit hour of Legislative changes in Montana Insurance Statutes and Administrative Rules.

Annuity Requirement

  • There is no annuity requirement at this time.

Long Term Care Requirement

  • Initial eight (8) hours LTC (on or before July 1, 2008).
  • Four (4) hours LTC every 2 years following.

Carryover Requirements

  • Credit hours cannot be carried over to the next compliance period.

Course Repetition

  • Credit will not be given for course that is repeated within a two year biennial period.

Final Exam

  • A course examination monitor must be a disinterested third party. The monitor cannot be a member of the licensees’ family by birth, marriage or any other recognizable family relationship. The monitor may not have financial dependence on the licensee; this excludes employers, employees, business partners or any other person who would benefit from the licensee passing the examination from monitoring examinations.
  • Specific Monitor Affidavit needed.


  • Non-resident agents whose home state CE has a reciprocal agreement with Montana.
