California State Requirements

Continuing Education Hours

  • 24 Hours Biennially including 3 Hours of Ethics.

License Renewal

  • License renewal date is the last day of the month when the license was issued.

Courses accepted for CE Credit

  • Classroom Courses
  • Self-Study Courses
  • Online Courses
  • An Instructor can earn the same number of credit hours as a student
  • Licensees can only get credit for approved courses for the license type held

Annuity Requirement

  • Initial 8-hour training requirement: Before selling annuities in California, producers must complete an initial 8-hour, state-approved annuity training course.
  • Ongoing 4-hour training requirement: After completing the initial 8-hour training requirement, producers continuing to sell annuities must complete a 4-hour, state-approved annuity CE course in every 2-year license term following the initial 8-hour training completion.

Long Term Care Requirement

  • Long Term Care: Individuals who sell long-term care products in California must complete 8-hours of California LTC annually for the first four years, then 8 hours biennially thereafter. These courses are state specific and state provided.
  • California Partnership Long Term Care: Individuals who sell California Partnership for Long-Term Care products must obtain eights hours of specific partnership LTC and 8 hours of California-approved LTC credits before soliciting. Thereafter, 8 hours in each type of LTC CE courses must be completed biennially. However, a new licensee must complete 8 hours of California-approved LTC annually for the first four years of licensure, and 8 hours in partnership LTC biennially. These courses apply toward the completion of the basic CE requirement.

Carryover Requirements

  • CE Hours can carry over onto the next cycle from the second year of a previous licensing term only, and cannot exceed the next renewal education requirement.

Course Repetition

  • Credit will not be given for a course that is repeated within a compliance period.

Final Exam

  • No monitor required for a final exam.

Exemptions

  • Agents who are 70 years or older and have held a California insurance license in good standing for 30 years or more. These agents must still meet the long-term care and CA Partnership long-term care requirement if they choose to solicit long-term care products.
