Calculating the Rate

Whether the portfolio rate or the new money rate method is used, there are several approaches used to arrive at the actual numerical rate to be credited. A common approach is to credit a rate (or rates, in the case of the new money rate method) that reflects the company’s earnings on its entire portfolio of investments during the year in question. Another approach would be to use an expected rate of return on the accumulations.
